Tip· Kyoto

Visiting Kyoto

Start early, and don't rely only on trains - Kyoto is more spread out than Tokyo and you'll need buses too.

Kyoto is a different rhythm from Tokyo. Two things made it work better for me.

Start your days early

Kyoto is beautiful, but it gets very crowded. If you want to visit places like Fushimi Inari, Kiyomizu-dera or Arashiyama, I'd really recommend going early in the morning.

It's also much nicer for pictures and for actually enjoying the place instead of just following crowds of tourists.

Don't rely only on trains

Kyoto is very different from Tokyo. In Tokyo, you can do almost everything by train or metro, but in Kyoto you'll probably need buses too.

The city is more spread out, especially for temples and shrines. You can use your Suica on buses, but I'd still check the route in advance because buses can be crowded and slower than expected.
